Here at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart science in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades is departmentalized.
In Grade Five the students are touching on all of the three major branches of science and learning how to conduct formal lab experiments.
In Grade Six the students study Earth Science with specific emphasis on astronomy, meteorology, rocks and minerals, plate tectonics and forces that alter the surface of the earth.
Seventh Grade is Physical Science which introduces the students to basic chemistry and physics.
In Grade Eight two science courses are offered: Life Science and the Living Environment. Life Science introduces the students to cells, heredity, ecology, classification and the human body. The Living Environment, formerly called Biology, is offered for high school regents credit.
Both eighth grade courses also prepare the students for the NYS Intermediate Science Assessment that is given in the spring of Grade Eight. Results of this test have been outstanding with 100% of last year’s students meeting or exceeding New York State standards.
All science courses have weekly lab experiences that compliment the material taught in class.
