Middle School MathWelcome to Jr. High Math! Whether your child is a strong math student or is someone who occasionally struggles, I am sure that they will achieve more than they ever thought possible. My goal is to provide every student with the skills necessary to pass the NYS Assessment Examination and to prepare them for High School Mathematics.

All students receive 100% credit for doing their homework – even if all the answers are incorrect! This homework policy is meant to encourage students to practice the skills they learned in class, and it gives me an opportunity to determine who may need additional help. Furthermore, I always let the students start their homework in class so that I am present to assist if any questions should arise.

Students are also given the opportunity to write about math by completing a journal question after every test. This not only enforces writing skills, but also helps the students to understand how math can help them in everyday life. The students also learn about how math is connected to their other subjects, especially science.

Students in my class enjoy occasional review games and math board games which are played in small groups. Our new textbook series from publisher McDougal Littell, is available online, so the students do not have to carry home a heavy book every night. The website also contains games and additional practice problems for the students to utilize.

The students from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart leave here very well prepared for High School Math. In addition, some students are given the opportunity to take 9th Grade Math during their 8th Grade year at one of the local Catholic High Schools. My goal is to have each student work up to his or her potential and leave my class with a sense of accomplishment and pride in their mathematical abilities.
